Blockchain Explorer

Blockchain Explorer

Starnet, 2024

In this project case study, I will be sharing my experience designing a blockchain explorer. The goal was to create an explorer that made it easy for users to view transactions, blocks, and nodes for a new blockchain being developed.

Throughout the design process, I focused on understanding users and iterating on ideas to enhance the overall experience and encourage engagement with the new product.

Process

Understanding

Every project is unique, each requiring its own combination of approaches. Understanding this is the first part of my process. Assessing the needs of the project — the users, the market, the objectives, is a vital element for achieving any semblance of success.

A critical element of blockchain is its transparency. Being able to view the activity happening in real-time is important to users and the blockchain value proposition.

Exploring

When I reach a level of understanding that I'm comfortable with, I prefer to explore as many ideas as my time allows. There is no "right" solution to any given design problem, so trying out different approaches is a valuable step to achieving success. It is also important to not get carried away, 'too much of a good thing' can waste valuable time and energy.

Collaborating

Another critical aspect of my process involves collaborating with other members of my team, or members of any team. Sharing ideas and different perspectives on problems and solutions is a huge benefit to any project.

Outcome

The Explorer launched as an early-stage tool designed to give crypto users and game players transparent visibility into blockchain activity. Despite being a proof of concept, the product successfully delivered on its core goal — making on-chain data about transactions, blocks, and nodes legible and engaging for a general audience.

By prioritizing clarity and accessibility over technical depth, the design helped demystify blockchain activity for users who were curious but not necessarily technical. The result was a product that built confidence and trust in the new blockchain, serving as an important part of the broader user experience for the platform.
