Internal Data Tools

Internal Data Tools

ZoomInfo, 2022

As the sole UX and UI designer, I led the design of a suite of internal data management tools for ZoomInfo's analyst teams. Working closely with product management and engineering, I was responsible for all UX and UI work across the suite — from initial research and strategy through final design and periodic updates.

Process

Understanding

Before designing anything, I worked to understand the specific tasks, pain points, and mental models of both analyst groups. Since these were internal users with deep familiarity with their existing (if painful) workflows, understanding what they knew and what they struggled with was critical to designing tools they'd actually adopt.

Designing from the Ground Up

Most tools were designed from scratch, with some existing tools receiving dramatic redesigns. I applied UX best practices to bring structure, clarity, and consistency to workflows that had previously been built without a design foundation — prioritizing efficiency for high-volume, repetitive tasks.

Iterative Updates

Work was done sequentially across the suite, with periodic updates to all tools over time. This iterative approach allowed me to incorporate learnings from earlier tools into later ones, and to respond to evolving analyst needs as the product matured.

Outcome

The resulting suite of tools — including CERA, a Chrome extension used by 150+ internal analysts, along with Review Room, Traceability, Data Infusion, and Tech Editor — gave ZoomInfo's teams dedicated, purpose-built interfaces for each area of data management. Qualitative feedback from internal users indicated meaningful improvements to day-to-day workflows, replacing ad hoc processes with tools designed around how analysts actually worked.
